What You Should Do If Your Car Runs Out of Gas

You might try to take your chances when it comes to refilling your gas tank. Gas can be expensive and going to the gas station is inconvenient at times. However, the risk could end in you finding yourself dragging your Orlando Toyota to the side of the road on an empty gas tank. So, you might be asking yourself, how did I get here? Well, here at Toyota of Orlando will give you the best tips on how to know when your car is about to run out of gas and what you should do in the roadside emergency of running out of gas.

Four signs your car is about to run out of gas

Keep these signs in mind when your car is running out of gas!

  • Sputtering noises coming from the engine.

  • Backfiring noises coming from the tailpipe.

  • The sound of your car accelerating in a jerking manner.

  • Lack of power or acceleration when you hit the gas.

If you notice any of these signs, it's time to hit the nearest gas station up immediately. Now, let's say you don't make it to the gas station. What do you do?

What to do if you run out of gas on the road

You might find yourself in this situation if you have a broken gas gauge or forget to fill up your tank. Unfortunately, you are in this situation, but our experts will give you the best tips to make sure you're safe at the end of the day.

Step #1 Pull off the road and away from traffic

If you can, get your Orlando Toyota and book it to the side of the road. Find yourself a safe spot to pull over and park. You want to ensure that you're a reasonable distance away from traffic, especially on the highway. If it's nighttime, grab your emergency flashlight and get yourself to the nearest well-lit space.

Once you're parked, pull your emergency brake, turn on your hazard lights, and turn your steering wheels away from the road.

Step #2 Figure out your exact location

You will need some roadside assistance, so before making that call, figure out where you are before making the call! If you're calling a family member or friend, you can simply use your smartphone's share location feature. If not, you can use the addresses of local businesses and street names to figure out where you are precise.

Step #3 Who to call

If you don't know who to call to get you out of this, or maybe you don't have a family member or friend nearby to bring you a gas can of fuel, you can opt for roadside assistance. AAA offers fuel delivery, but you may want to check with your car insurance for other options. If you don't have telephone service, your best of luck is to walk to a gas station for fuel. However, make sure to stick to sidewalks as much as you can.
