Car Accessories and Items You Should Always Keep on Hand

Going out into the world is seen as a routine and mundane practice we do every day. We don't often think of the risk associated with getting behind the wheel, hopping on the highway, or driving through a parking lot. Truly, anything can happen at any time and we as drivers need to always be vigilant and prepared. A great way we can do that as drivers is by keeping specific car accessories on hand that can help us in times of need.

Toyota of Orlando is here with a short list of our favorite accessories that you can use whenever you find yourself in an automotive tizzy. Check them out here!

Car accessories available at Toyota of Orlando

Keep These Car Accessories on Hand Always

 Car First Aid Kit

A first aid kit is one of the most practice car accessories you can have on hand. After all you never know when you'll need one and they can cover injuries from simple cuts to large lacerations. Make sure you use one that includes a plentiful supply of bandages and gauze, medical tape, gloves, a flashlight, and other tools. Some even include raincoats and other useful items. Make sure to keep any and all medical tools up to date to avoid using expired products.

Jumper Cables/Battery Charger/Tire Pump

Break downs and flat tires happen to the best of us and you need to make sure you're ready for whenever they do. Jumper cables an absolute necessity to have on hand. While you need another person to get your ride back up and running, this is the easiest and cheapest option when your battery stop working. A tire pump is also helpful for when your tire has lost air but hasn't gone flat and you don't feel like waiting in line at an Orlando Wawa.

Cell Phone Holder

It goes without saying that using your phone while driving is highly dangerous, but many drivers rely on their phones for other necessary tasks. GPS, music selection, taking hands-free phone calls and so on are all things we do with our phones. To make the process a bit more distraction-free, use a dashboard mounted phone holder. This keeps your phone in line with your view of the road so you're not looking down into your lap and away from the road.

Emergency Multi-tool

It's true that in some emergency situations the tools put in place to keep us safe can prove highly dangerous. Luckily, in the event of a serious accident or your Orlando Toyota car becomes submerged, there are emergency multi-tools. These multi-tools combine things like flashlights, seat belt cutters, and window breakers into one useful car accessory you can use in a sticky situation. Grab one and put it in an easily accessible place in the event of an emergency.

Dash Cam

While you may not have thought of putting a dashboard camera in your windshield, the benefits are endless when you use one. Not only can you capture fun moments in the car with your family and friends, it can also be your best friend in the event of an accident. You'll always have proof in the event the police and insurance company call into question who was at fault for a vehicle accident. Plus it can help prove that you're the best driver out there if anyone should ask questions (wink wink).

Car care resolutions you should make for 2021

A new year is upon us (good riddance, 2020!). Are you ready to leap into 2021 with a clean slate and resolutions to make it the best year yet? Plenty of people vow to exercise more, eat better, save money, or get more organized... but hardly anyone considers getting better at caring for their vehicle. However, to keep your vehicle in top shape and get the most bang for your buck, it's critical that you care for your car on a routine basis. Check out these five easy car care resolutions we think you should make for 2021!

Toyota of Orlando tips

Five car care resolutions to make for the new year

1. Learn how to jump-start your car. You never know when battery troubles will fall upon you and if you know how to jump-start your car, you're ahead of the game. Toyota of Orlando offers step-by-step instructions on how to jump-start a car on our website and it's in your best interest to print them out and keep them in your vehicle next to your jumper cables! If you want to practice, have our Orlando auto service techs show you the ropes next time you come by for routine auto service.

2. Get in the habit of detailing your car monthly. Keeping your car clean also helps keep its resale value high and can earn you more money when you sell it or trade it in. Be sure to wash and wax your car often and take the time to empty out the interior before vacuuming and wiping all surfaces. You should also clean the glass (with the right cleaner!) and shine your tires once a month to keep your Orlando Toyota looking like a new ride all year round.

3. Take good care of your spare this year. When's the last time you checked your spare tire? You'll be in a bad spot if you get a flat tire and go to put your spare on only to find that it's also flat. Every time you detail your car, take a minute to pop the trunk and check out your spare tire. If it needs car care, take care of it right there and then (like filling it to the proper PSI) so you're ready for the open road and any emergencies that may come along with it at all times.

4. Let us put you on an oil change schedule. Your best bet at keeping your car healthy is to get on a routine oil change schedule. And luckily for you, we can set up a schedule and send you reminders via email or phone call whenever you're due for this car care at our Orlando auto service center. Remember, oil keeps your engine cool and lubricated and without it, you may face costly repairs.

5. Teach yourself to change a tire. Do you know how to swap out a flat tire for a spare? It's a useful skill to have in your arsenal and our Orlando car care experts recommend that you learn it. That way you can keep moving if you find yourself with a flat tire and no one around you to help. We have step-by-step instructions on our website; print them out and keep them with your tire jack, your lug wrench, your spare, and your tire pressure gauge!

Five winter car care tips from Toyota of Orlando

Here in the city of Orlando, we don't see harsh winter weather. The most we'll get is maybe some frost on the windshield when the temperatures take a big dip. However, as you move north, winter weather is inescapable and not only calls for an adjustment of your driving habits but also to your car care habits. Toyota of Orlando is here to share five winter car care tips for everyone who has to deal with harsh winter weather on a regular basis.

driving in winter weather

Winter car care you should put into practice

Tip #1: Keep your gas tank half full.

When you're in the throes of winter weather, you should keep your gas tank half full at all times. You never know when you'll be delayed getting where you need to go due to inclement weather or a car accident up ahead, and the last thing you want to do is run out of gas in bad weather (if you run out of gas, you'll also be unable to use the heat in your car). Stay fueled up this winter!

Tip #2: Check your tire pressure regularly.

You should check your tire pressure on a weekly basis (at least) in harsh winter weather. Cold weather makes your tire pressure drop. Underinflated tires not only lack traction and lower your fuel efficiency, but they also wear faster and are more prone to blowouts and flats. Ensure your car tires are at the PSI they should be at all times, especially in winter.

Tip #3: Think about putting winter tires on your car.

If you live in an area that sees some pretty solid winter weather - we're talking snow, ice, and sleet - then you may want to consider winter car tires. These tires are designed to handle the road in bad weather conditions. They have deeper treads to funnel snow and water out of the way and provide you with much better traction, and they're also made of a special rubber that doesn't get stiff in the cold (and can subsequently grip the road better).

Toyota of Orlando tips

Tip #4: Take good care of your windshield wipers.

Make sure you take good care of your windshield wipers in winter. The cold can damage the rubber on them so replace them as needed and never use them to clear frost or ice off the windshield. If you're parking your car outside, make sure that you lift the wipers off the glass before you leave so they don't freeze to it.

Tip #5: Wax your car for added protection.

You should be washing your car regularly during winter weather to remove snow, salt, and other elements that can damage the paint and cause rust. You should also apply a coat or two of quality wax for added protection from moisture and salt to keep your paint looking brand new.

Is it Worth Springing for AWD or 4WD? Different Car Drivetrain Discussion

The vehicles we drive day in and day out are a true reflection of our needs and what we expect from the machines we pilot. For many drivers a simple commuter with ample room in the cabin is all they need. For some what's needed is an extra large amount of cabin space to accommodate extra cargo and passengers. And then for some it's the capability and workability to get any and every job done. That's why we have so many options available to us in the automotive market and it can sometimes be overwhelming.

Toyota has recently been imbuing many of its vehicles with available AWD and 4WD car drivetrain capabilities, at an extra cost. If you're an SUV driver and are wondering if this feature is something you need, Toyota of Orlando is here with a quick pros and cons discussion to help you decide.

Orlando different car drivetrains

AWD and 4WD. Are they Worth the Upgrade?

When it comes to the discussion of taking the plunge and ponying up for AWD or 4WD on your ride, the decision can be boiled down to the simple argument of "it depends." As we said, every Orlando driver needs their car to perform specific tasks for them. If you're someone who plans on off-roading, towing heavy loads, or using your vehicle for laborious tasks, you're likely going to need a different car drivetrain than 2WD.

If you're still on the fence or are thinking or upgrading to an Orlando Toyota Camry or Avalon with AWD, these pros and cons should make it easier to decide.

Pros of Going AWD/4WD

  • 4WD and AWD are different car drivetrains, but they both send power to all four wheels as compared to 2WD which only sends power to either the two front or rear wheels. This can give you the benefit of better stopping power and acceleration and better traction control.
  • Vehicles with 4WD or AWD have higher resale values than their 2WD counterparts. This is especially true if you're in a market that frequently sees drivers springing for these different car drivetrains.
  • Because of the power supplied to all wheels versus two, Orlando Toyotas with these drivetrains have superior towing capability.
  • Inclement weather is also much easier to brave. These drivetrains afford better traction which is essential when driving through snow and heavy rain.

Cons of Going AWD/4WD

  • By going AWD or 4WD you can most certainly expect your payments to be higher. Vehicles with these Orlando car drivetrains are significantly more expensive due to the addition of a more complex engineering system.
  • They're also more costly to maintain. Providing power to all wheels versus half of them requires extra cooked in parts and therefore more auto service.
  • While many 4WD and AWD vehicles have been optimized and reworked over time, they still sip gas more heavily than their 2WD siblings. Powering all wheels of a car requires more energy and that comes right from your gas tank.
  • One of the most glaring things that might deter you from an AWD or 4WD vehicle is the capability of modern 2WD Orlando Toyota cars. Many front and rear wheel drive cars are built with advanced safety features and evolved traction control which make them more than capable of getting you through a tough spot on the road.
But, if you're planning on towing, hauling, or off-roading then you'll likely be forced into springing for AWD/4WD or driving a vehicle with it already included.

Why is there no electric car in Toyota's lineup?

Toyota is all about going green. They're the ones that introduced the first hybrid car to the general market, after all - the iconic Toyota Prius. Since then, they've continued to do serious research in the world of alternative fuel cars, releasing tons of green options for drivers from all walks of life. Today's lineup includes hybrid models of many of their existing vehicles as well as an innovative hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, the Toyota Mirai. The one thing missing, though? An electric car

Will Toyota ever have an electric car?

Why does Toyota not have an electric car in its inventory when so many other makes - Tesla, Chevy, Nissan - do? We don't have a firm answer, but Toyota of Orlando has taken a pretty solid guess as to why the automaker isn't heading down this road (again). Check it out.

1. They've already done it.

Did you know that Toyota has actually already put an electric car on the market? Circle back to the early 2010s and you'll remember the Toyota RAV4 EV. It was a collaboration with Tesla and the first electric vehicle to enter the Toyota lineup. It had some drawbacks, though, when compared to current electric cars. It could only go 100 miles on one charge and had to travel at low speeds to achieve that type of range. It was also expensive. Electric vehicles have been mightily improved since then, but it wasn't too much of a hot ticket item and was retired after a short period of time.

2. The infrastructure is lacking in some areas of the world.

Electric cars have to be plugged in and charged, and they can only go so far on one charge. This means you need charging stations throughout the country to ensure drivers don't have to return home to charge (this is especially critical if drivers commute a far distance or are on a road trip). Unfortunately, many areas of the country don't have the infrastructure and lack charging stations for EVs, making it difficult for drivers to own and operate them.

3. There are other excellent eco-friendly options.

Toyota may not have an electric car, but they do have tons of other alternative fuel options. There are 10 hybrid models up for grabs right now as well as a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. If you want to go green, you can easily do it without having to buy an EV.

4. Hybrids have rapidly evolved.

Hybrids were introduced to the market way back in the early 2000s and they've been steadily improved and enhanced since then. Orlando Toyota hybrids today are exceptionally fuel-efficient and eco-friendly and also cost less than electric cars; they also don't need to be charged, offering drivers a little more versatility.

Essential Questions You Should Be Asking Your Auto Service Technician

Asking questions is always an excellent idea whether you're in class or at the doctor. It's also a key thing to do when you're getting auto service done with your service technician. Understanding what's going on under the hood of your ride and what your chosen technician is doing to fix your problems is essential to becoming a better driver. This also helps you know exactly what you're paying for.

At Toyota of Orlando we take absolute care to brief all our customers on what services we're providing and what goes into a repair. But, that doesn't mean you should hold your questions. Check out these essential questions you should ask of your automotive technician.

Orlando Toyota auto service tips

What You Should Be Asking Your Auto Service Tech

Question 1) Which Certifications Do You Have?

Being an auto service technician is not only physically demanding, it requires a great deal of credentials. Technicians must be certified in specific areas of service before being able to conduct those jobs on their own. This means many hours of learning and apprenticeship. Before your chosen mechanic begins their work on your Orlando vehicle, ask which certifications they hold and what jobs they allow them to do.

Question 2) What Replacement Parts Does Your Shop Use?

Replacing parts is an essential part of vehicle service and the types of parts used to replace your broken or old ones can make or break the repair entirely. There are many aftermarket automotive parts out there that can get the job done, but it's always better to use OEM parts. Here at Toyota of Orlando we only use genuine Toyota OEM parts so your vehicle will always stay at factory quality whenever you have auto service done.

Question 3) Does Your Shop Offer Free Estimates?

You'd be hard-pressed to find a shop that doesn't offer free estimates before you surrender your vehicle, but you never really know unless you ask. We always recommend asking your auto service technician if free estimates on repairs are offered to avoid any unexpected expenses. You should also ask for the technician to inform you of any unexpected repairs that need to be completed as some shops will simply conduct the repair and bill you for unrequested services.

Question 4) How Long Will the Repair/Service Take?

Depending on what type of service you need completed, your time waiting could be short or long (to put it obviously). But, if the shop is busy a longer wait time could occur even if the service you need typically doesn't take long. Ask your service technician how long you should expect to wait so you know how long you'll be without a car.

Question 5) What are Your Costs for Labor?

Every shop calculates their time and labor costs differently. Before you surrender your vehicle for auto service, ask your technician how much will be added to your bill regarding labor fees.

Things to Remember When Driving in the Snow

Living in Orlando, you'd be hard-pressed to find snow anywhere. But, with it already being cold in our tropical paradise, you can imagine how cold it's going to be up North. If you're someone who seeks out a genuine holiday experience complete with snow, hot chocolate, and frigid air, then you'll likely be doing some driving in the snow. To get yourself seasoned and ready for the extra dangers that come from commuting in the snow, Toyota of Orlando is here with a few key tips you should keep in mind.

Orlando tips for driving in the snow

Tips to Remember When Driving in the Snow

Tip 1) Slow Down

Your Orlando Toyota car is not likely amply equipped to handle the rough and slippery conditions that come with driving in the snow. Just like we slow down when it rains here in Florida, we recommend slowing down when you encounter snow on the road. This will give you more time to react to objects in the road or sudden slow downs and it gives you more control of your vehicle. Snow can cause sudden slips and slides in the ride and you need to be ready for whatever happens.

Tip 2) Take Wide Turns

Whipping around a corner or turning too suddenly can spell trouble when driving in the snow with your Orlando Toyota car. To prevent your ride from slipping out of control when turning a corner, make sure to turn wider than you usually do and take it slowly.

Tip 3) Don't Apply the Gas or Brake Quickly

Many Orlando Toyota cars are equipped with a form of traction control or anti-lock brakes, but you should still exercise caution. When hitting the gas or brakes quickly while driving in the snow your wheels could spin out.

Tip 4) Don't Make Sudden Moves

To avoid an accident while driving in snowy conditions we highly recommend avoiding making sudden moves. This can help prevent you from slipping and sliding in the snow and causing an avoidable accident.

Tip 5) Keep Your Distance

Just like driving in the rain here in Orlando, it's recommended you keep ample distance between you and the car in front of your when driving in the snow. Snow can create slippery and unpredictable driving conditions and you could wind up rear-ending the person in front of you if you're not careful. Increase your follow distance and give yourself ample time to react and come to a complete stop.

Tip 6) Use Your Windshield Wiper and Headlights

Again, just like when it rains, make sure to turn on your headlights and windshield wipers when driving in the snow. This can help other drivers see you and keep your view clearer.

Are you ready to brave the snow? Make sure to swing by Toyota of Orlando to have your vehicle thoroughly serviced. Schedule your appointment online or visit us at 3575 Vineland Road.

Do your car headlights need to be replaced or repaired?

Your car headlights are critical for your safety when you're out on the road. Whether you're driving at night or tackling treacherous weather, they both light your way AND make you more visible to other drivers on the road. That's why it's critical to keep them in the best condition possible and also ensure that you address any issues as soon as you notice them. Toyota of Orlando is here to help - check out these four signs from our expert auto service techs that you need car headlight repair or replacement stat.

Toyota service tips

Four signs you need to schedule car headlight service

Sign #1: Your car headlights are flickering.

Does it seem like the lights coming from your headlights is flickering or uneven? This can indicate that the bulbs are going bad and need to be replaced soon. Just like the bulbs you use in lights inside your home, they do wear out over time. However, if the flickering doesn't stop after you replace the bulbs, you might have a bad harness or an issue with your battery connection, so it's worth having our Orlando Toyota service techs take a look.

Sign #2: Your high beams don't work even though your low beams do.

If you can get your low beams to turn on but your high beams won't activate, the bulbs may have an issue, so try replacing them. If that doesn't fix the problem, it's time to visit Toyota of Orlando. You could have a blown fuse or there could be a problem with your wiring.

Sign #3: The light coming from them is dimmer than usual.

Do your car headlights not seem as bright as usual? This can mean one of two things. One is that your car headlight bulbs are about to burn out and need to be replaced soon. Another is that you have a damaged or corroded ground wire. Either way, you need an expert to fix the problem so it's best to contact our Orlando auto service center.

Sign #4: You keep blowing fuses under the hood.

If fuses keep blowing under the hood of your car, you might have an issue with your electrical system as a whole. Our auto care techs will need to check your car headlights as well as the electrical system and wiring in your car, so visit us ASAP.

What You Should Do Should You Find Yourself Stuck in a Ditch

Unfortunately, car accidents are par for the course when it comes to driving. As careful as you might be, as defensively as you might drive, you can never totally account for everyone else on the road being safe or weather going easy on you. Your commute can turn unpredictable and dangerous at any given time and you could find yourself deep in the clutches of a ditch. If this has happened to your or you're afraid of it happening to you, check out Toyota of Orlando's safe driving tips!

Orlando safe driving tips

4 Safe Driving Steps You Should Take if You Get Stuck in a Ditch

Step 1) Check for Injuries

If you've found yourself in the wrong side of a ditch, make sure to check yourself and your passengers for injuries. It's essential for safe driving to check for injuries after an accident occurs. This way those injured can get medical attention quickly.

Step 2) Turn on Your Hazard Lights

Your hazard lights should only be activated when signaling a breakdown or accident on the road (we're looking at your Orlando drivers who turn them on every time it rains). After crashing into a ditch, make sure to practice safe driving and turn on your hazards as soon as you can. This will alert other drivers that you've been in an accident and will warn emergency service vehicles that you're there.

Step 3) Lighten the Load or Don't

Depending on the nature of the ditch you got stuck in, you might be able to make your way out of it. If the ditch is dry and shallow enough, try lightening your cargo load and accelerate to get out safely. Practice safe driving and check your surroundings before doing this. When accelerating you should make sure to press the pedal gradually instead of flooring it. This can cause you to dig a hole with your tires and get even more stuck.

The opposite goes if you're stuck in a wet or muddy ditch. Keeping more weight on your Orlando Toyota car can actually help you get a better grip on the dirt and mud underneath you. But, you're likely going to need a little extra assistance to get out of your predicament if things are a little wet. Try putting a piece of wood, cat litter, or gravel underneath your driving wheels. This will help your ride get a grip on the ground and help pull or push you out of the ditch.

Step 4) Call Someone

If you've exhausted your safe driving tips and means of getting your Orlando Toyota car out of a ditch, it's time to call the pros. Make sure to call a reliable towing service to come and assist you. After your vehicle has been pulled out of the ditch, we highly recommend taking your ride into a vehicle service center, like at Toyota of Orlando. Our expert auto service techs can inspect your vehicle to determine if it sustained any damage from the accident

Do you know how to react after a car accident?

No matter how careful you are when you get behind the wheel, car accidents can happen. And whether it's your fault or the fault of another driver, it can be stressful to deal with the aftermath. Toyota of Orlando, as always, is here to help you pick up the pieces. We've got tips on what to do after a car accident straight from our auto body repair experts - let them walk you through it step by step so in the unfortunate instance that you DO find yourself dealing with a car accident, you can do it as efficiently and calmly as possible.

auto body repairs

7 steps to take immediately after a car accident

Step #1: Assess injuries. Before you do anything, assess yourself and the passengers in your Orlando Toyota. Is anyone hurt? If so, it's best to call for an ambulance so paramedics can at least check anyone over before deciding if a trip to the hospital is necessary.

Step #2: Pull your car off the road if you can. You should always try to pull OFF the road after a car accident if you can. This will get you out of the way so you don't risk another car hitting you. If you can't move your vehicle, you should turn the hazard lights on to make it more visible to other drivers and then get yourself and all of your passengers out. Move to the side of the road clear of traffic.

Step #3: Call emergency personnel. If you haven't already called the police, do it now. It's best to document the accident with an official accident report - your insurance company will likely ask for it, especially if you're not at fault. Make sure to get a copy of the report or at least the report number so you can request a copy later.

Step #4: Exchange information with the other driver. You should exchange information with the other driver before you leave the scene of the accident. Be sure to get details like:

  • Name
  • Contact information
  • Insurance information
  • Car year, make, and model

Step #5: Write EVERYTHING down. Now is the time to write down all the details while the car accident is still fresh in your mind. Be sure to record where and when the accident happened, how it happened, who was involved, and what the outcome was. You should also document the damage to both cars with photos so you have them for future reference.

Toyota of Orlando tips

Step #6: Talk to witnesses. If there were witnesses to your car accident, ask them to give you their contact information so you can get a statement from them in the future if necessary.

Step #7: Call your insurance company. Finally, you should report the car accident as soon as you can. Start your claim and be sure to tell them that you want to bring your car to Toyota of Orlando's Toyota Collision Center for repairs - we'll use Genuine Toyota Parts to keep your Toyota a Toyota and get you back on the road as quickly as possible.

Ready to Dive into a Custom Toyota Car Project?

The automotive world is quite a large one, but the world of custom cars is almost too large to quantify. There's an uncountable number of parts and accessories you could slap onto your vehicle at any time to change the look, performance, and more. The culture around custom Toyota car is huge too! Movies have made custom jobs iconic and have likely inspired you at one point or another to put new exhaust or custom paint on your ride.

If you're ready to dive into the world of custom cars, Toyota of Orlando is here with a few things you should consider before getting started.

Orlando custom Toyota car tips

Think About This Before You Make a Custom Toyota Car

Just like restoring a classic can be time consuming and expensive, so can creating a custom Toyota car. Before you start searching for aftermarket accessories for your Orlando Toyota ride, consider these points.

The End Result of Your Custom Journey

Making a custom Toyota car is a journey between all the money and time you'll spend. Before you start buying parts or attaching accessories, you should strongly consider how you want your finished custom job to look and feel like. This will give you an overall sense of direction and help you better account for what you need to make it happen.

The Vehicle You Want to Customize

Customizing an Orlando Toyota car is a difficult task regardless of what vehicle you choose to customize. But, there are some vehicles out there that are just constructed to be customized. The Toyota 86, older Toyota Supras, and the Scion tC are all great examples. That's why you'll often see them in gear-head movies and other custom Toyota car settings. If you're driving a Corolla and want to customize it, it's not impossible but could be more difficult.

Budget and Parts Cost

Because of capitalism (among other things) things cost money and custom Toyota car parts are no exception to this truth. It's wise to start customizing your Orlando Toyota car with a financial barrier in mind. This will keep you grounded and from overspending. You should also consider what you intend to do with the car when the project is finished. If selling you should make sure to not over exert your budget to exceed the highest sale figure you could get.

Tip #1: Don't let it sit.

Our top tip for car care after off-roading? Don't put it off. That mud isn't going to get any easier to wash off if you let it sit - on the contrary, actually. Try to clean your vehicle as soon as you get home to make the experience quicker and easier.

Tip #2: Rinse your Orlando Toyota with a pressure washer before you wash.

It's a good idea to rinse your off-roading vehicle with a pressure washer (or the hose on the high setting) before you actually wash it. Not only will this help get the mud off more quickly, but it'll also ensure that all sand particles are rinsed off as well. If you try to wash your car with sand still stuck to it, it can lead to swirls in the paint. And don't forget to wash hard-to-see places like the wheel wells and under your running boards.

Tip #3: Wash with quality products.

You should always use quality products when washing your car - never resort to dish soap, which can actually damage your paint over time. Visit our Toyota of Orlando parts store and let our specialists help you pick out the right cleaning products for your ride.

Tip #4: Apply wax.

It's always a good idea to add waxing to your car care routine for after off-roading. Not only will it help protect your car from moisture and surface scratches, but it'll also make it much easier for you to clean next time around. Shop our Toyota of Orlando parts store for a quality (but affordable) wax!

Tip #5: Wash the undercarriage.

Don't forget to wash the undercarriage of your car - it likely took the brunt of the mud, dirt, and sand. You'll need to get under there with the hose and spray everything clean but we'll give you a quick life hack - invest in a cheap rotating sprinkler head that you can attach to the hose. Turn the water on and stick it under your vehicle - it'll do a majority of the cleaning for you and save you a lot of time.

Tip #6: Rinse out the suspension and brake components.

Finally, rinse out the brakes and suspension components. This will ensure they stay sand-and-dirt-free and can continue to operate without excessive wear and tear.

And don't forget to air up your tires if you already haven't - driving with underinflated tires can put them through excessive wear and tear and also drop your fuel efficiency.

How to Determine if Your Classic Car is Worth Restoring?

Long-term projects and hobbies are what give life flavor. They're a break from the mundane of going to work every day and they help us have an outlet and get creative. For many automotive enthusiasts out there this hobby usually entails restoring a classic car. For some of us this is a great way to make a larger return on investment while for some of us it's about the emotional tie we have to a particular engine and wheels. Whatever the reason, we can't deny that restoring an Orlando classic car takes time, money, and patience and it's not something you should take lightly.

Before you begin and during the process you'll need to make sure you determine if restoring your vehicle is worth it. Luckily, Toyota of Orlando is here to help steer you right with a list of things you should consider before diving in.

Orlando Toyota classic car tips

Is Your Classic Car Really Worth Restoring?

Like we said, restoring a classic isn't as simple a hobby as video games or knitting. Depending on your chosen vehicle you're going to be in for a huge financial and time commitment when all is said and done. Restoring a vehicle DIY can help you save money but you really need to know what you're doing and know that it will take much more time to finish the job. Before you dive in too deep you need to consider if your restoration is really worth doing. Here are a few questions you should ask yourself before and during the Orlando classic car restoration process:

What Do You Plan to do With the Car?
Before you even consider looking up an eBay listing or finding a junker body, you need to ask yourself what you plan on doing with the vehicle once it's restored. Do you plan on selling the classic car for a profit when it's finished? Are you going to keep it? Give it to someone as a gift? Whatever the reason, you need to assess the financial and personal worth of the Orlando project car. If you're anticipated cost outweighs the possible profit you could make then the choice is obvious. For someone who's emotionally attached to the project this decision will be difficult.

What's the Original Condition of Your Chosen Vehicle?
Depending on the starting point of your chosen vehicle's condition, your Orlando classic car restoration can take on any number of intricacies. If you plan on buying a rusted out body with no chassis or engine, you're going to be spending a lot of time and money throughout the project duration. If your vehicle is nearly finished being restored, it will cost more up front but you'll have a much easier time finishing the vehicle.

How Much will Parts Cost?
More than likely you're going to have to replace a few Orlando auto parts on your classic car before the restoration is finished. Typically the more expensive vehicles come with a high cost for parts due to lack of wide availability. If this is the case for your chosen ride, get ready to do some extensive parts hunting and get ready to pay up.

Tips for your winter road trip

Halloween is almost here, which means the holidays are about to really kick off. Will you be hitting the highway to celebrate with friends and family? If so, it's critical to ensure that your Orlando Toyota is prepared for the journey. Luckily, our Toyota service center at Toyota of Orlando is here to help you take on the open road like a pro.

auto service tips

Which auto service appointments should you schedule before a road trip?

Before you go on your road trip, there are certain service appointments you should consider scheduling. Here are the top ones to think about putting on the books before the holidays arrive.

1. Tire service: Before you hit the open highway for the holidays, you'll need to ensure your tires are up to the task. They should be properly inflated to the right PSI as well as have enough tread to grip the road. On top of that, our Orlando auto service techs should visually inspect each tire to ensure they're in good enough condition to handle high speeds and long distances during your road trip.

2. Oil change: Oil is crucial for keeping your car's engine cool and lubricated, especially when you're driving for long periods of time at high speeds. Make sure you schedule an Orlando oil change before you take off so you don't run the risk of engine damage during your road trip.

3. Brake service: You always want braking power on your side, but especially if you're driving through inclement weather like rain, snow, or sleet. Brake service at Toyota of Orlando will ensure your brakes are in top shape to take on any road conditions.

Toyota of Orlando tips

4. Headlight check: Make sure ALL lights on your vehicle are working before you take off on your road trip. This means headlights, taillights, turn signals, hazard lights, and all interior lights, including your dash lights. Our techs can replace burnt out bulbs and fix any lighting issues you have.

5. A/C and heater service: The last thing you want is to be stuck without a working heater in winter weather. Check your A/C, heater, and defroster NOW before you start your road trip and ensure all three are working properly and well.

6. Car detailing: No one wants to hit the highway in a dirty car. Schedule car detailing before you leave so your ride is fresh and clean for the start of your holiday road trip

The Different Types of Car Tire Tread and What They Mean for Your Ride

Just like your shoes keep your bare feet from touching the ground (ew), your car tires keep your ride from making contact with the ground and going nowhere at all. But, like your shoes encounter everything from glass to gum while you walk around, your tires also encounter many pieces of debris and other hazards in the road and threaten their integrity. Your tires are often ignored until it's too late and you've run into a whole mess of issues. The best way to get to the bottom of what's ailing these essential auto parts is by inspecting the treadwear pattern. At Toyota of Orlando we're here to help you better understand what these patterns mean.

Orlando car tire tips

What These Car Tire Treadwear Patterns Mean for Your Ride

Center Wear

Car tires typically wear out evenly all around if they're inflated and driven on properly. If you're starting to notice that the center of your Orlando tire is wearing down at a different pace than the sides, this could be caused by over-inflation. If your tires' pressure is too high look for bulging and excessive wear and let some air out.

Side Wear

Contrary to center wear being caused by over-inflation, under-inflation causes excessive treadwear on the sides of your car tire. If you're someone who's conscientious about how much air you put in your tires, this type of wear can also be caused by a damaged steering arm or faulty alignment.

Cupping Wear

You might not see this type of Orlando car tire treadwear often, but it's easy to spot. Cupping wear looks exactly like it sounds, cup-like divets in your tread. These are often seen on trailer tires that bounce as you drive. If you see this wear on your vehicle's tires it could mean that you're riding on work shock absorbers or are having suspension system issues.

Feathering

This type of tread is a bit difficult to spot visually but you can feel it if you run your hand down the length of your tires' tread. If you feel spots where one side of the tread is sharper or more shallow than the other then you have a feathering problem. This is most often caused by poor wheel alignment and/or aggressive driving behavior.

Sidewall Wear

While it's not directly caused by your driving habits so much as your ability to park, sidewall wear is still important to touch on. When you run your Orlando car tire against a curb or other parking obstruction it can cause damage to the sidewall that results in damage to the tire's overall integrity

Flat Spot Wear

Highly noticeable and easily felt, large flat spot tread wear can be an indication that you're engaging in bad braking habits. Stop driving and braking harshly and be less aggressive during your commutes. If you dont believe yourself to be an aggressive driver, you could be having brake system issues.

Five things to cross off your fall auto service checklist

Fall is technically here and while it may not feel like it here in Orlando, the weather is actually cooling a little and will continue to do so in the coming months. That means it's time to start working on your fall auto service checklist! Toyota of Orlando's expert auto service techs sat down with us to come up with a quick list of things you'll want to cross off your checklist before the season gets into full swing.

Orlando Toyota car care

Five auto service items to check off the list this fall

#1: Top off all fluids

You should top off all fluids as fall sets in. The summer and the hot temperatures that come with it can take a toll on everything under the hood of the car, so you should have all fluids checked and if needed, topped off. This means oil, power steering fluid, brake fluid, coolant, and wiper fluid. If you need assistance, our Orlando car care techs are here to help!

#2: Check your tires

Make sure your tires are in top shape this fall before you hit the road. The roads can get slippery between fallen leaves, rain, and even a bit of ice when winter eventually rolls around. You want your car tires to be in good general condition, inflated to the proper PSI, and to have the right amount of tread to give you the traction you need.

#3: Make sure your headlights and taillights work

When we fall back in the autumn, you could find yourself spending more time behind the wheel in the dark. You want to ensure ALL lights on your vehicle work, including headlights, taillights, turn signals, hazard lights, interior lights, and dashboard lights. If you've got any issues, address them at Toyota of Orlando today.

#4: Test your defroster

You'll need your defroster both as it rains and the temps cool down. We may not get much of a winter here in Orlando, but we do see cooler temps that can lead to foggy glass in your vehicle. Test your defroster now to ensure it's working properly (and while you're at it, test out the heat, too!).

#5: Have your car battery inspected

You'll want to have your car battery inspected as we head into a new season here in Orlando; the extreme temperatures  can have a negative effect on it. Our auto service techs can check it for general condition (they'll look for things like swelling, leaks, or rust) as well as test the voltage to ensure it has enough juice to get you up and running every day.

Schedule your fall auto care at Toyota of Orlando

Essential Car Parts You Should Know About

Have you ever been panicked by the sight of a check engine light or a due for maintenance warning sign? While we advise that you need not panic, we at Toyota of Orlando understand why you would. Upon taking your vehicle into the shop what you thought was a simple oil change could easily turn into a huge expense. But, we believe that knowledge is power and that you can circumvent the panic and distrust by knowing what's what under your car's hood.

At Toyota of Orlando we pride ourselves on our auto service technicians and their honesty to every guest. Unfortunately you might not always be able to acquire our car care services and need to make do with other auto mechanics. To make sure you get the service you need, check out these common car parts and their functions so you know what's going on when you check engine light illuminates.

Common Car Parts You Should Know About

1) Camshaft

Your engine works by using a variety of valves to regulate the flow of fuel mixture during the ignition process. This ensures that your engine doesn't catch fire and that the right amount of fuel is ignited when necessary. This Orlando car part does not typically need to be replaced, but they can be damaged if your vehicle is low on oil.

2) Heater Core

While we don't often need to use the heating function of our cars here in Orlando, but you can thank your heater core for the occasional winter day when you need warmth. This car part operates similarly to a car radiator and sits behind the dashboard.

3) Power Window Switch

Unless you're a 90s kid, you might not remember using crank windows too fondly. Luckily, the power window switch car part is there to help you out. Unfortunately, this car part can run into issues when plagued by dust and dirt or it can break when aged.

4) Wiper Motor

In the rainy Orlando area, we can't emphasize enough how important it is to use your windshield wipers. However, you can't use your wipers without the crucial auto part, the wiper motor. If this part stops working you can kiss your clear view goodbye.

5) Axle/CV Shaft

This auto part takes power from the differential and distributes it to the driving wheels. This car part is encased in something like a rubber boot that might need to be replaced every so often. These are often needed to be replaced before the shafts themselves.

6) Mass Airflow Sensor

Your engine, while I giant mass of metal and fire, is also a perfect example of balance and timing at work. Your mass airflow sensor is an integral auto part that operates the flow of air into your Orlando Toyota engine to allow your engine to create power.

7) Shock Absorbers

Without your shock absorbers there to cushion the blow, driving would be terribly uncomfortable. This Orlando car part acts as a barrier between the imperfections of the road and your vehicle. Because of the amount of punishment they take these auto parts will often need to be replaced

8) Ignition Coil

Your ignition coil send voltage to the spark plugs which creates the spark needed for combustion to occur and power your vehicle. This car part can wear out over time and will need to be replaced to avoid misfires or bad startups.

9) Muffler

Without something to quiet the sound of your vehicle's engine, you'd get pretty annoyed rather quickly by the sound. That's where your Orlando Toyota muffler comes in. This car part quiets the sound of your car engine.

10) A/C Compressor

Without your compressor, your A/C wouldn't work properly and keep you cool during the warmer times in Orlando. If you're having issues with your a/c, you'll likely need to have the compressor checked.

Upgrading Your Car Sound System Made Easy

For many drivers, the best part about driving is having the perfect accompanying music to jam out to until you reach your destination. The perfect song can make or break your ride and you need to make sure you have the right system to make your sound as perfect as possible.

If you're hoping for a little more from your current car audio system, there's a lot you can do! At Toyota of Orlando, we're here with some great tips to get you started on your upgrading process

Orlando car audio system tips

Get Better Sound From Your Ride with These Tips

1) Choose What You Want to Upgrade

Your vehicle's audio system consists of much more than just a few speakers and a head unit. Even factory systems could include smaller enhancers and other devices that improve what you hear while you drive. But, for those looking to take their auditory experience to the next decibel you need to decide on what you want to upgrade after taking stock of what you have. Afterward you should establish a strict budget and stick to it.

2) Replace the Head Unit/Infotainment System

The Entune Infotainment System available in Orlando Toyota models is one we're huge fans of (guilty), but a change if often necessary when making drastic changed to your car sound system. Changing the head unit will give you more customization opportunity and choice when it comes to your Orlando car audio system interface.

3) Get New Speakers

While we recommend getting as much use out of your OEM equipment as possible, you might need to replace your speakers depending on your upgrading plans. If you overall car audio system exceeds the power limits on your Orlando Toyota car speakers, they'll need to be swapped out for equipment that can better handle the power boost.

4) You're Gonna Need More Power

When adding almost anything to your Orlando Toyota car that involves wiring or electrical work, you're going to need to increase your power output. Keep your car battery in mind throughout your upgdrading process. To better power your car audio system, use an amplifier to designate audio channels and distribute power accordingly and help your system run more efficiently. Subwoofers can also give your sound a deeper bass feeling, but you'll need to take into account the amount of power it will need to operate.

5) Use a Subwoofer and Designated Amp

If you like your ride to shake or want bassier reverbs from your music, adding a subwoofer will do the trick. However, you should consider adding a dedicated amplifier to power it. This will all decrease your Orlando Toyota car's storage space significantly so be strategic with your car audio system layout. You can also run the risk of battery drain by hooking up too many devices so be mindful.

How should you prep your car for the end of daylight savings time?

Fall is in full swing and as the time passes, the days are getting shorter and shorter. Daylight savings time is about to end which means you might need to prepare for the fact that your commute - whether some or all of it - could be taking place in the dark. Luckily, Toyota of Orlando is here with tips on how to prepare your car for the end of daylight savings time with simple auto service tips. Check it out!

driving at night

5 tips for handling the end of daylight savings time

Tip #1: Deal with any lighting issues.

If you're driving in the dark, you're going to want each and every one of the lights on (and inside) your car to work properly. Before daylight savings time ends, have our Orlando Toyota service techs check your headlights, taillights, turn signals, hazard lights, and all of the lights on your dash and inside of your car. This way you can see everything you need to no matter how dim the lighting during your commute.

Tip #2: Get on top of brake service.

When was the last time you had brake service? You can't see as well in the dark and animals tend to be more active at night - both factors that can contribute to you having to come to a sudden stop. Make sure your brakes are in the best shape possible so you can bring your car to a quick stop whenever needed without issue.

Tip #3: Clean your windshield inside and out.

Our Orlando auto service techs recommend cleaning your windshield (and your back window) inside and out before daylight savings time ends. If you have dust or smudges on the glass, they'll reflect light from other cars and streetlights when you're driving in the dark. This can negatively impact your visibility and make it dangerous for you to be on the road.

Tip #4: Check your defroster.

Is your defroster working? We know - you rarely use it until after Christmas. But it's important to ensure your defroster is working as daylight savings time comes to an end in case we get a chilly morning where you need better visibility. If you're having issues, bring your car to Toyota of Orlando's service center to have our techs check it out.

Tip #5: Inspect your tires thoroughly.

How are your tires? Before you tackle a commute in the dark, make sure that they're in excellent physical condition and have the proper amount of tread needed for traction. You want to have a good grip on the road and no one wants to change a flat tire in the dark.

Let Toyota of Orlando help you prep for the time change

Bad Driving Habits You Should Fix ASAP

In our minds we're the best driver on the road. We always follow directions and do nothing wrong. Unfortunately we're being super biased and we're very much thinking incorrectly. Mistakes happen and being behind the wheel doesn't prevent us from making them. But, being behind the wheel and driving does mean that your mistakes can be far more consequential if you're not careful.

If you've become blind to your bad driving habits, don't stress! Toyota of Orlando is here with an easy guide for identifying these issues and fixing them ASAP.

Orlando bad driving tips and tricks

Most Common Bad Driving Habits and Solutions

1) Distracted Driving

This Orlando bad driving habit takes many forms. Eating, texting, talking on the phone, adjusting your seat or mirror, picking music, bird watching, whatever. It's easy to get distracted while driving, especially if you're a driver with plenty of self-proclaimed confidence. This is a bad habit that you need to nip in the bud and fast. Driving distracted can lead to accidents and it's very dangerous to engage in this behavior when behind the wheel. Put your phone down, eat before driving, keep your eyes forward, and stay distraction free

2) Driving without a Seatbelt

One of the worst bad driving habits you can have is not wearing a seatbelt. This, other than your brakes, are one of the most quintessential and important safety features of your car and it's important you always wear one. Going without wearing your Orlando Toyota seatbelt can leave you prone to being ejected from your vehicle in a collision which almost always proves to be fatal. Do yourself a favor, wear a seatbelt.

3) Tailgating

If your mind jumped to images of football and barbecue, you're not on the right track (wahh wahh). Tailgating is common on the road and you may have likely engaged in or have been annoyed by it at one point or another. Following a vehicle too closely is a bad driving habit that spells an accident waiting to happen. If the driver in front of you decides to come to a stop you'll likely wind up with a nice fender bender to grace your finances with. The solution? Be patient, don't drive aggressively, and give yourself about 4-5 seconds worth of moving distance between you and the car in front of you.

4) Not Using Yah Blinkah!

This may sound harsh, but your Orlando Toyota vehicle is equipped with turn signals for a reason and you should just use them. Always alert drivers to your movements so they can react accordingly.

5) Driving Aggressively

Frustration is a human emotion and sometimes it can get the better of us. If you're frustrated behind the wheel, take a chill pill, relax, and drive calmly. This will prevent you or someone else from getting into an accident.

6) Speeding or Driving Too Slowly

Speed limits may seem more like guidelines than actual rules (really, again?), but they're there for a reason. They're the safest determined travel speed on a roadway and you should always obey them. This means no speeding and no driving super slow. Both are terribly dangerous, one can wind up getting you into an accident, while the other will surely make other drivers mad.

Still need help breaking your bad driving habits? Toyota of Orlando is here to help! Chat with us online or visit the dealership at 3575 Vineland Road today.

Different Types of Car Brakes Explained

Driving is often thought of a lot of go. You sit behind the wheel, put it in drive, and step on the gas until you arrive at your destination. While you wouldn't be entirely wrong in thinking this way, you'd be missing the other half of the driving equation, braking. Bringing your vehicle to a stop at a moment's notice is one of the most important parts of the driving process and the most original form of safety feature.

While we probably (hopefully) don't need to give you a masterclass in braking, knowing about your car brakes and how they work can help you better understand your vehicle. Toyota of Orlando is here to walk you through the different types of brakes out there that you might even have on your ride.

The Most Common Car Brakes in Orlando Toyota Cars

1) Disc Brakes
Orlando Toyota car brake tips

Many Orlando Toyota cars feature this type of car brake system. Disc brakes work by using parts like brake pads, rotors, calipers, and hydraulic fluid. They work by distributing hydraulic fluid through the brake system when the pedal is pressed. This pushes the calipers together against the rotor which creates friction to gradually bring your vehicle to a stop. They're used often on a variety of vehicles because of their superb performance in wet conditions and great ability to dissipate heat when used.

2) Drum Brakes

While similar to disc brakes when it comes to shape and overall function, drum brakes deviate by using a container with brake shoes inside. When the car brake pedal is pressed in your Orlando Toyota car, the shoes press against the sides of the drum to bring your ride to a stop. Because this brake type is contained in one unit it's cheaper to replace. But, it isn't as popular as disc because it can retain water and rust and they can overheat easily which causes a loss in stopping power.

3) Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS)
Orlando Toyota car brakes explained

They're not necessarily a type of car brake, but they do work in conjunction with this essential Orlando Toyota part to make stopping easier. ABS is a type of technology that's integrated in many modern vehicles that prevents your brakes from locking up when pressed suddenly. Pressing the brake pedal quickly can often cause your wheels to lock and create a skidding effect. ABS senses the rotational speed of each wheel and pulses the brakes to help retain traction while still bringing your vehicle to a quick stop.

4) Emergency Brakes

Also known as e-brakes, emergency brakes are there for exactly what their name implies, emergencies. This type of car brake is activated by a handle next to the driver's seat, a foot pedal, or a button. It's often used when the vehicle is already parked to keep your vehicle in place and ease pressure on your wheel brakes. This Orlando Toyota brake works by connecting your main brakes with a cable. If you have a driving emergency like brake failure you can use the e-brake to slow the rear wheels.
